The Arts & Genomics Centre
The Arts & Genomics Centre is based at Leiden University’s Gorlaeus Laboratories. The Centre provides a platform for international artists, scientific researchers and professionals from business and government organisations, with the aim of stimulating, initiating and supervising meetings, discussions, collaborations and exchanges.
The Arts & Genomics Centre investigates the interactions of arts and genomics. (‘Genomics’ is the new term for large-scale heredity and gene research. The word is derived from ‘genome’ – the total set of genes in an organism.) The centre aims to describe and analyse the unique role the visual arts can have in the critical evaluation and dissemination of the results of genomics research. It thus attempts to expand the public debate around the goals, means, possibilities and uses of genomics. It also endeavours to form a specific point of view for biogenetic art and to develop tools for attracting new audiences.
