| Food or fuel | Arne Hendriks | 21-02-2008, 17:35 | | I guess it is a choice we cannot make since we need both. That's why it is important that we create more awareness of this problem and get more talented people involved and reach some sort of critical mass where all efforts combined create better ways of extracting fuel from biomass. I for one would like to know more about the possibilities of getting biomass from algue and what the opportunities are in that field. |

| | Ethanol or Maize? | Sergio | 20-02-2008, 12:06 | The subject is open for discussion. Some governments are considering which would be the best option for their nation’s future. However is important to recall that simple choices like using the bus, selecting our food, having a hot shower, and so on, are the way that we are shaping the future of the society and the planet.
The power of choice is within us, and the question: food or fuel? is raised: what would you choose?
-In U.S.A. the “Ethanol Agriculture” generates 350,000
jobs.
-Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger.
-Ethanol has a more benign impact on greenhouse gas
formation than gasoline.
-The use of maize as fuel will increase hunger in Guatemala.
-The demand of Ethanol increased by 50% the price of the tortilla in Mexico, the basic food among the country.
-Ethanol does not pose a water quality threat.
-The U.S.A. have already 74 plants producing Ethanol from maize and there are other 15 plants in construction, with an investment of about 50 millions each.
-China and India are suffering due to the constantly growing price of soy.
-The high demand of soy and maize for biodiesel production demands more agricultural fields increasing the landscape transformation and therefore the climate change. |
